The Automotive Stadium

Other features of the Autostade included: parking for 11,000 cars, large administration offices, a press room, radio and television booths seating 60 people, a special lounge for dignitaries, storage and dressing spaces, as well as washrooms and concession stands located on the concourse level under the stands.
The stadium's modular design meant it could be easily dismantled after Expo and reassembled elsewhere. A Montréal '66 article stated that it could even be "enlarged to seat 75,000, which would make it by far Canada's largest stadium"...

But, alas.....it was built like alot of other things in the 60's.....and did not last.
Today the place is occupied in part by some kind of ugly powerplant and a parking space.
Ahhhhh but the stadium lives on in several areas of Montreal
Pieces of the Autostade were moved and rebuilt. There are stands from the Autostade in parks in both Lasalle and Laval.
Recycling at it's best.
The irony in this whole autostade adventure, was that the location was probably the best location in Montreal to build a great sportsplex. Imagine a modern stadium, possibly a new arena for the Canadiens side by side off highways 720 and 10.
Instead we have that toilet seat of Olympic stadium in the east end, no highway access, ugly and falling apart.
Did you know that Michael Jackson, while a member of the Jackson5 performed at the AutoStade! He and his brothers pulled up onto the field in a stretched white limo. I was about 10 feet from him...He was fantastic! Does anyone have any photos of that performance? This would have been in 1972 to 1974 approximately. If you have any photos pls send them to john.lariviere@gmail.com...tks..
